Have you heard about the nitrate time bomb? It’s a kind of slow-motion hangover from our agricultural past. The story starts in the middle of the 20th century when farmers doused their fields with fertilisers containing nitrate chemicals. Crop yields went through the roof but many of the chemicals sank into the bedrock beneath the soil and over the following decades have been leaching into the water-bearing aquifers from which we drink. The result is that many of Britain’s water sources contain toxic blooms caused by fertilisers sprayed by farmers who died decades ago.
